FAQs

What is a cloud engineer?

According to TechTarget, a cloud engineer is an IT professional responsible for any technological duties associated with cloud computing, including design, planning, management, maintenance, and support.

A cloud engineer is a general term encompassing a few different roles, including:

  • cloud architect
  • cloud software engineer
  • cloud security engineer
  • cloud systems engineer
  • cloud network engineer

Each of these positions focuses on a specific type of cloud computing rather than the technology as a whole. Organizations that hire cloud engineers are often looking to deploy cloud services, scale up their use of cloud resources, or further their cloud understanding and technology.

What does a cloud engineer do?

Glassdoor states that cloud engineers specialize in creating, testing, and implementing software applications at a company or an organization.

They are the technical professionals responsible for planning, designing, managing, maintaining, and supporting cloud computing applications.

For example, they might determine their client's technological needs and suggest solutions that meet them. They also might enhance the delivery of cloud deployments and collaborate with development teams and other personnel (e.g., engineering) to streamline application services.

Cloud engineers also evaluate older applications and determine their viability to be migrated or transferred to cloud services. They design, implement, and manage cloud-based systems for businesses, and when appropriate, they help debug cloud stacks.

What can I expect to earn as a cloud engineer?

As of Jun 9, 2022, the average cloud engineer salary in the U.S. is $126,965 a year, according to ZipRecruiter. According to Robert Half, a certified cloud engineer is one of the 15 highest-paying IT jobs.
